IELTS Writing 雅思寫作如何運用【反問句】高階技巧

Rhetorical Question直譯為「修辭學問句」，其實就是自問、反問。英文定義為:’It is a question not meant to be answered.’ 那即是說，是一種「無疑而問、明知故問」。

 

這種特殊的修辭問題式表達法，在IELTS Writing 衝7分以上的文章是常見的。而且對評卷員來說，Rhetorical Question的應用往往能吸引住他們的眼球。上幾個月，我跟有份改公開試Writing 的marker朋友吃頓飯，他明言要改的試卷太多，考生的Writing作品是很難逐字來閱的，他講出marking的頭幾個步驟:

 

1. 看大體格式;

2. 看introduction 和Conclusion

3. 看topic sentence怎樣寫(如有Rhetorical Question，會留意其鋪墊)

連Marker都提到Rhetorical Question，所以這個IELTS Writing技術，我打算深入講講。

Rhetorical Question常利用作topic sentence的過渡，可以放在topic sentence的前或後。既是「無疑而問」，其功能肯定不是詢問。而是以問句的形式，來表達一種【大眾感受】，從而引起1.共鳴、2.不滿及諷刺。而且，用的過程是需要配合Writing Tone的。

 

Writing Tone大概分三種:

Formal Tone、Semi-formal Tone、Casual(Friendly) Tone。

Writing應該用什麼Tone 不是本文的重點，我在這裡只是略為提出。以下是當文章傾向Friendly Tone時，用的Rhetorical Question 例子:

 

傾向Friendly Tone

1. You don’t think I’m that stupid, don’t you?

即是說【大眾】認為我不蠢的！對被誤解抗議。

 

2. You are not going to wear that, are you?

即是說【大眾】都不太ok那件衣服。

 

3. Are you kidding?

即是說對這種「開玩笑」顯示不滿。

 

4. Why do you even bother?

即是說對其打擾不滿。

 

5. Who cares?

對冷漠不滿。

 

6. Are you serious?

對其認真表示不太認同。

 

7. So now what’s your excuse?

你沒有藉口了吧！

 

而傾向Formal tone的例子，句型多以較長句子表達:

1. What’s the worst that could happen?

已經最差的狀態了。

 

2. Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?

實在為你感慚愧。

 

3. How did that idiot ever become elected?

表達出【大眾期待】落空。

 

4. What about other functions of your new device?

表達出還有未曾使用的功能。

 

5. Did you consider this option yet?

有另類選擇哩！

 

在這裡，我試試寫句Rhetorical Sentence作過渡句，引出Topic Sentence的例子吧。我想講的Topic Sentence是「善用智能電話是非常有價值的」。

E.g.

What about the school or educative programs are shown on apps by smartphone? Have you ever thought about that? You will never realize how valuable using smartphone is.

 

Topic Sentence前面的就是Rhetorical Question。用此作過渡，作適當的邏輯鋪墊，marker會對你的Writing有較深刻及良好的印象。是衝7分必備Writing 技巧。
